4/10 Born Again and the Human Spirit’s influence for Total Wholeness

Welcome back to our discussion on our Human Spirit!  So far in our journey, we have talked about what our Human Spirit is and what is it NOT.  We have seen that our spirit has definite purposes, given by our Creator.  The main purpose is our connection and worship ….to Him!

However we also saw that this part of our personality, the real YOU, can be in many different conditions of health and awareness.  In our next post, we shall see how our spirit connects and is meant to guide the other parts of our ‘Boardroom’, our personality.

1.  Jesus said that we must be ‘Born again’ to understand spiritual things.

So what does this mean for our human spirit?   Remember so far, we have discussed how the ‘human spirit’ is the real YOU.  That must mean our spirit has been touched by the Holy Spirit for this rebirth process to happen!

We hear Jesus’ words in John 3:3-8 NIV.  In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”

“How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!”
Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.  Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

This raises a problem for most of the human race then as our spirit can be found to be in many different conditions: crushed, broken, stubborn and so on.  So part of this reborn journey is for our spirit to find life and truth from the Holy Spirit.

The human spirit requires “the spark of regeneration” before there is an understanding of the things of God. Man’s spiritual nature must be renewed before there is a true conception of Godliness. Only one thing stands as a guard at the door of man’s spirit, and that is his own will. When the will is surrendered, the Holy Spirit takes up His abode in the spirit of man.

2.  Then some church attending people may not be born again?

Many people confess that they get nothing out of the Bible even though they attend church and read their Bibles regularly. Perhaps they do not know that they are not regenerated and that they need to yield their will to the Spirit of God so that He can renew their human spirits. The deep things of God never will be understood by the world outside of Jesus Christ.

1.  Remember how we defined the soul?

For the purposes of understanding the ‘Boardroom’ and the seven special parts of our personality, we have defined the soul as the mind, heart, emotions, will and the conscience.

2.   Adam and Eve’s contribution to the human race

The soul of mankind can’t be directed God-ward until of the seeds of self-centredness, pride, rebellion and self-sufficiency have been faced and dealt with the way our Creator directs.

3.   Rebirth is necessary to find God

Until after the spirit has been touched and become ‘regenerated’ and brought back into contact with God again, we are all lost in that fog of confusion and doubt, blinded and hard-hearted toward God.

We can never love God nor the things of God until we are born from above. We may have a troubled conscience or be so stirred emotionally that we may weep bitterly and still remain dead in trespasses and in sins.

4.  What part of us responded to God’s call?

We do not feel that we are guilty of judging others when we explain that some who have answered an altar call and shed tears ….. actually were never were ‘born again’ with their spirit interacting with the Holy Spirit.   Some have responded with our conscience, that sense of right and wrong and may respond to the condemnation of the conscience.  Their change of lifestyle and ‘following God’ is born out or law and legalism.  Sadly, many Christians are still stuck in that legalistic, ritual style of religion rather than a real relationship with the Lord Jesus.

Other have had their heart touched with His love and may respond out of an emotional awareness and experience.  Again, there is healing in the touch of the Lord and this may lead them into a deeper and deeper relationship with Him.

However, some Christians may also be stuck in seeking the emotional high that comes with the touch of the Holy Spirit.  For them, unless they continue to reach this level of emotional experience, “God is not there and doesn’t love me.”

The same concept applies with the will; self effort is touched and a performance Christianity may be their experience of following Jesus.  Again the grace and rest is missed for this group of ‘believers’.

1.  Whole-hearted Repentance is the Foundation for our Spirit to know the Creator

It is only when our heart and mind are turned toward God when we begin to  realizes our sinful condition and God’s grace in salvation. That conviction of the Holy Spirit that we need His saving, His cleansing of our old way of life happens.  When the Spirit of God illuminates our spirit with divine light and life, that we begin to yield our life and heart to God.

2.  It is through our spirit that God is able to change give us new life.
It is through the human spirit that our minds are renewed, mindsets are discarded and truth replaces the lies implanted by Satan.

3.  We must face the true enemy of our spirit

Satan knows full well that he dominates the physical or the soulish man. Therefore he does not care if a man goes to a church where the Spirit of God is not honoured. He knows that his victim is a creature of emotions, and it matters not if the emotions are stirred to sentimentalism or even to tears, just so long as man’s spirit does not come in contact with God’s Holy Spirit.

1.  We receive God initially when we are born anew.

This new birth takes place in our spirit, for according to John 3:6, “…that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” Not only does our spirit function to receive God initially; it continues to function to receive our Creator through our spirit for the rest of our Christian life.

The Lord prophesied of this New Testament experience in Ezekiel 36:26: “I will also give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you….” God wisely gives His believers both a new heart to love Him and a new spirit to receive Him.

In our next post, we shall raise the question ‘How does our human spirit relate to the other seven parts of our personality?  What effect can we expect where our spirit is ‘awake’ and connected to our Creator?  How does this happen and what are the results?
