6/12 Emotions are God’s Gift to help us toward Total Wholeness

So far in our discussions on emotions, we have given you a definition of emotions.  We have talked about how emotions develop and how healthy emotional expression is essential to good mental health.  We have presented you with a list of words to help express the right intensith of emotions.  We even present t

We now move onto the main purpose of our emotions – as ways to help you gt in touch with deeper issues, as messangers from your Heart.

A.  Emotions are really God’s Gift to us!

1.  Having Emotions means you are part of humanity.

Part of making peace with our emotions is to identify and accept our ‘negative’ feelings.  We can get to the point of seeing our emotions as thermometers, or danger signals that something is not quite right with the inner system.  For example, being ‘short tempered’ may be the signal that we are under too much stress.

2.  Used the right way, Emotions can become tools, or messengers to help see us more clearly.

Believe it or not, well-understood, trained feelings can be something like thoughtful, reliable servants – respectful and aware of their place.

3.  See your emotions as ‘Messengers from your heart’.

Your emotions will help you gain insights about what is happening inside your heart.  One of the ways your heart communicates with you is sending messages that are we see as ‘emotions’, letting you know its condition.  Is your heart happy, then you will feel happy.  If your heart is frustration, then you will fell frustration.  These feelings can help you know how to respond to life and where the pain is buried.

4.  We must learn to hear that message (not necessarily to obey the heart) and listen to what is going on inside of us.

Psalm 4:4 gives the same admonition but tells us to search our hearts also which highlights the fact that the emotions do indeed proceed from the heart.

B. The Roots of all Emotional and Mental Illness?

1.  Emotions must be Handled in Healthy ways.

Psychologists have long known Emotions as a driving force of the personality, impacting our drives, instincts, our needs and wants.  Emotions can upset every gland in the body, thus causing up to 85% of the treated illness seen by doctors.  Emotions are also ‘created’ by hormones and glands.

2.  All Mental and Emotional illness comes from three sources!

a.  Genetic and Biological causes – inherited defects, chemical or hormonal imbalances and the results of physical abuses, such as drugs or alcohol.

b.  Environmental causes – childhood abuse and trauma, family of origin dysfunctions, faulty social skills, poor coping methods, poor role models, and so on.  What we think influences what we feel.

c.  Spiritual causes, such as Generational Curses.

3.  Ignoring our Divine Creator causes Dysfunctions

Since we are made in His image, we have certain basic, God-given needs, wants and deep longings – such as the need for self-preservation, belonging, security, for significance and genuine, unconditional love.  These needs are built into our very nature.

To the degree that these inner needs and deep longings have been met, especially during childhood, the more stable our personality will be.  When we do not honour our God-given needs God’s way, we will develop problems.  By denying our God-given needs, mental and emotional pain result.

C.  Learning to Live with our Emotions

1.  Shared Emotions are the ‘glue’ that binds people together in relationship.

Strangely, it doesn’t matter whether the emotions are ‘positive’ or ‘negative’, the result is the same (“Stockholm Syndrome”).

2.  Using the right ‘strength’ feeling word which allows our relationship partner to set the priority in their response to us.

3.  See your emotions as ‘Messengers from your heart’.

Your emotions will help you gain insights about what is happening inside your heart.  One of the ways your heart communicates with you is sending messages that are we see as ‘emotions’.  These feelings can help you know how to respond to life and where the pain is buried.

4.  Your spirit and the Holy Spirit can heal and help work through any trauma and crippling of the emotions.

Well understood and trained emotions can be reliable servants leading us to what is in our hearts, even though we often regard them as enemies who need to be silenced. Our thinking regarding them may need to be renewed.

As we can see, feelings are designed to be our ‘tools’, or servants to help clarify what is happening to us moment by moment.  They are ‘sounding devices’ to help stop really serious psychological problems from developing; valuable allies as we learn how God intended them to work.

Next week, we will venture into how to bring healing to wounded or crippled emotions.  See you then!
