7/17 We keep our ‘Idols’ hidden in our Heart

A.  A quick Review: what is the heart and what does it do?

Our heart is an unconscious area of the inner person.  I like to visualise the heart like a black box.  The inner motivations are hidden within, but thoughts and emotions are influenced from inside of it.

The soul and spirit realms influence the heart.  We need to have a balance of spirit, soul and heart.  We also need to treat any dysfunction in our personality by using the right ‘rule’ for the problem.  We may deal with our heart by acting it out, repressing it or getting it cleaned out.

We need to learn to use spiritual tools for spiritual problems, emotional tools for emotional problems, and of course, mental tools when we deal with the Mind.  The problem get confused all all these ‘parts’ of our being are inter-combined. Remember all the ‘parts’ of the Boardroom’?

B.  Spiritual influences on the Heart

As we have seen the heart is affected by the spiritual dimension.  This can be both positive and negative.

1. What is in the Throne Room of our Heart will rule us.

Jesus wants to claim His role with our Heart.  He came to heal the broken hearted and wants to have a deeper relationship with us and with our Heart.  Jesus doesn’t just want to make us a new creature in the Spirit.  He also wants to be Lord over our soul and heart.  It is no accident that in Matthew 22:37 we are told to “love God with all our heart”, first.

Spiritually we can believe that Jesus is in our heart and thus ‘be saved’, Romans 10:9.  However, we may have idols in our Heart and thus come under judgement, Ezekiel 14:1-5
1Then some elders of Israel came to me and sat down before me.

2And the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

3“Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts and have put right before their faces the stumbling block of their iniquity. Should I be consulted by them at all?  4Therefore speak to them and tell them, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “Any man of the house of Israel who sets up his idols in his heart, puts right before his face the stumbling block of his iniquity, and then comes to the prophet, I the Lord will be brought to give him an answer in the matter in view of the multitude of his idols,  5in order to lay hold of the hearts of the house of Israel who are estranged from Me through all their idols.”

This was very serious for the elders of Israel.  We certainly need to clean our heart towards God s well.  …but how do you do this when your Heart is hidden from you?

Many people have trouble ‘seeing’ God clearly, because their hearts are full of sinful attitudes and idols.  Whether we submit our Heart to the Lord will have consequences – sometimes eternally.

2.  We all begin with the Heart as a ‘Spiritual Rubbish Tip’

We covered this concept when we talked about the Rats and the Compost concept.

However, It’s not just the poor attitudes and judgements that reside within our Heart, but like we saw in Ezekiel 14, idols and demons can be in there as well.  The demonic is attracted by what’s on the Heart.   The ‘good’ as well as the ‘bad’ stuff can separate us from God’s best.  Much of what passes for ‘treasure’ in our hearts is actually rubbish – from God’s perspective.  Even doing ‘good’ works can be idolatry of Self.

Demons are attracted to the ‘rubbish dump’ of the heart, because demons are behind all idolatry.

C. How to Deal with the Heart and its Idols

1. The process begins by identify the wrong attitudes that come from the Heart.

By talking with the Lord, He will give us a list of what He wants removed in our Heart.  However, if we are courageous, we can ask others what they think is in our hearts.  Always make sure it is someone who is non-judgmental, because others can see our Heart better than we can.

2.  Often we can get some clues just by listening to what we talk about because our words come out of our Heart.  Another hint: Heart, if there were no consequences to  your actions, what would you want to do?”  Often this shows what idols and other desires are in your heart.

3.  Have Jesus decide what to keep and what to throw away.

Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal which desires He wants to keep and which attitudes He wants to remove.  Ask the Lord what He wants you to do about it.  Self- deliverance may be necessary.  Bring the hidden out into the open as ‘a child of the light’.

4.   Be a child of the light

8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. Ephesians 5:8-11

Humble yourself to ask because whatever is here will come out one way or another.  He gives us the dignity and space to work with Him to cleanse our Heart…..or it comes out in front of others.

For many of us, discovering what Idols your Heart holds is the beginning of a new chapter in relating to the Lord and your Heart.  Here is one Practical way to see what is in the Throne room of your Heart, usually where the Heart keeps its idols.

Practical exercise: Ask the Lord to take you to the Throne Room of your Heart.  Begin by describing a throne.  Who or what is on the Throne? Deal with whatever is there by the way Jesus tells you to.

When your Heart is ready, give Him your Heart, Mind, Spirit, Will, Body, Emotions and Conscience – in other words invite Him to take control of your Boardroom for total Wholeness!
